Aims
- To give an introduction to the Disability Discrimination Act and more specifically, how this relates to post-16 education. To prompt you to consider how to change practices and procedures when working with disabled students.
- To introduce the two main duties under the Act - not to treat disabled students less favourably and how to provide reasonable adjustments.
- To outline what disability discrimination is in the educational environment. To introduce the issues of disclosure and confidentiality under the DDA Part 4.
- To outline what happens when a student claims that he or she has been discriminated against.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Briefly explain what the Disability Discrimination Act is.
- Describe Part 4 of the DDA - the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001).
- Appreciate how the Act affects you in the teaching environment and what might happen if discrimination occurs.
- Understand what less favourable treatment is.
- Provide examples of how reasonable adjustments may be made.
